A slip of the tongue, an unfriendly surprise at the end and at least a two-hour conversation: This is how the first meeting between the new German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Russia’s long-term chief diplomat Sergey Lavrov went.

Sergey Lavrov makes a small but treacherous slip of the tongue when he greets him. He is sitting across from Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in the guest house of the Russian Foreign Ministry. And speaks of the “Russian-American” relations. The interpreter does not translate the mistake of the otherwise sovereign Russian foreign minister. But it shows who, from Moscow’s point of view, is apparently decisive in Europe – the USA.
