As part of the broadband expansion for fast internet, more than 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables have been laid in Bavaria since 2014. Around 99 percent of Bavarian households are already connected to fast internet, the Ministry of Finance and Home Affairs announced on Friday in Munich.
The Free State supported the expansion on a voluntary basis with around 2.4 billion euros from the state treasury. In addition, the Free State is also relying on its own economic fiber optic expansion, said Finance Minister Albert Füracker (CSU) after a meeting with Andreas Pfisterer, CEO of the German Fiber Optic Group. In addition to the Bavarian funding programs, this forms the decisive pillar for Bavaria’s digital future.
Pfisterer stated that he wanted to continue to advance fiber optic expansion in the rural and suburban regions of Bavaria in close cooperation with the Free State. In order for Bavaria’s citizens to quickly enter the gigabit age, the federal government, the Free State and private telecommunications companies must continue to pull together.
“It is essential for us that people in Bavaria can actually use our fast fiber optic network; the demand is clearly there. Despite the current situation in the market with limited construction capacities and rising material prices due to inflation, we want to maintain our expansion speed in Bavaria,” said Pfisterer .
