More than 160 hectares of forest destroyed in a new fire near Lacanau

A new fire broke out in Gironde on Monday. More than 160 hectares of forest had already been destroyed by fire in the evening. The fire started in the afternoon in the town of Saumos, near Lacanau.

Some 300 firefighters are mobilized, as well as two Canadair, a Dash and two water bomber helicopters. The inhabitants of the town of Saumos, a village of 500 inhabitants located between the Atlantic coast and the agglomeration of Bordeaux, were also evacuated as a precaution.

County road closed

The departmental council adds that it had to close departmental road 5 to traffic. A diversion has been set up by the RD 5E3 and RD6, to reach Lacanau and Sainte-Hélène. The closure could last all night.

The Gironde, affected by major fires this summer (nearly 30,000 hectares burned), experienced very high temperatures on Monday, with in particular 37.5 degrees recorded in Bordeaux, unheard of since 1987.
