The beautiful and also boring thing about superhero films, romantic sleazeballs and kitschy genre literature is that good or bad can be identified so easily there: The good guys do good things; the bad guys bad. Unfortunately, however, this supposedly moral clarity often gets tangled up in the undergrowth of reality. Because even people of the highest moral integrity sometimes commit horrid acts. “We would never have thought that possible,” it is often said.
