Montpellier: a plane misses its landing and ends up in the Mauguio pond, the airport closed until further notice

A rare accident occurred on the night of this Saturday, September 24. After a runway excursion, a plane ended its race in the Mauguio pond.

“This Saturday, September 24, 2022, around 2:50 a.m., an Aéropostale plane (Boeing 737) loaded with freight, in the landing phase at Montpellier airport, left the runway to finish its route in the Mauguio pond”, indicates the prefect of Hérault in a press release.

The emergency services, quickly intervened on the spot, were able to extricate the three people who were inside the device. They are unharmed. Partially submerged at the level of the nose of the plane, the front part, the latter is immobilized at the end of the runway indicates the press release.

“As a safety measure, pending the intervention of a specialized company to move the device, Montpellier airport is closed for an indefinite period to freight flights as well as commercial flights”.

Significant resources were dispatched to the site, in particular 60 firefighters from the Hérault departmental fire and rescue service (including aquatic rescue specialists), the SAMU, the air transport gendarmerie brigade, as well as than the airport crews.

An investigation must be opened, “the accident investigation office is expected on site”, concludes the prefect.
