In the investigation into finding a baby’s corpse in Mönchengladbach, the police are now hoping for clues about a shopping bag. Authorities are appealing to the mother to come forward.
After finding a baby’s corpse in Mönchengladbach on Monday afternoon, the police are pursuing a first lead – and are hoping for the help of the population.
As reported, according to the police, a woman discovered the dead baby in a public garbage can in the Pesch district (corner of Ackerstraße/Carl-Diem-Straße on the edge of the Volksgarten park) around 4:30 p.m. and made an emergency call. The public prosecutor’s office and homicide commission took over the investigation, and the body was autopsied. “A forensic medical examination carried out late Monday evening revealed that the child was born alive and died as a result of violence,” the police said in a statement. One assumes a “deliberate homicide”. According to initial findings, the girl was only a few hours or days old, it said.
Mönchengladbach police ask for information about the shopping bag
According to investigators, the dead baby had been placed in a plastic shopping bag from the drugstore chain “DM” in the garbage can. The basic color of the tote bag is pink, four women are shown on it and the words “Are you ready?” on the one hand and “Days are running” on the other. This bag was probably bought in the past in the Mönchengladbach “Kaufland” branch on Reyerhütte Street, around 400 meters from where the body was found. Police released photos of the shopping bag:

The public prosecutor’s office and homicide commission are investigating “under high pressure”. A police spokeswoman wanted on Wednesday morning star-Inquiry initially do not provide any information on the status of the investigation. For clues to the perpetrator, the homicide commission is now turning to the public with questions:
- Who has knowledge or a legitimate assumption about a woman or a couple who may have repressed and/or hidden a pregnancy?
- Who knows someone who recently gave birth to a child and it has not yet been shown to anyone?
- Who noticed something suspicious in the area around the location?
- Who noticed a person – male or female – with the described bag at the site where the body was found or in the surrounding area?
At the same time, the authorities appealed to the dead girl’s mother to come forward. “In addition to the criminal investigations into the crime, the police also have a network with offers of help,” the appeal said.
