Disney’s 2016 “Moiana” is being adapted into a live-action action. Dwayne Johnson, who voiced the demigod Maui, returns.
“Moana” (original title: “Moana”) became a success in 2016. The Disney animated film grossed over $680 million at the box office and was nominated in the 2017 Oscar categories for Best Animated Feature and Best Feature Song. Now the island of Motonui and its inhabitants are returning to the big screen, this time as a live-action adaptation. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (50), who originally lent his voice to the demigod Maui, announced the good news on Twitter. “I am proud to say that we are bringing the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen,” the actor tweeted.
Maui changed his life, “and I’m honored to work with Disney Studios to tell our story through the realm of music and dance, which is, at its core, who we are as Polynesian people,” said Johnson, who is on grew up in Hawaii. The announcement features a clip of the actor and two of his daughters on the beach in Hawaii.
“I wear our culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this unique opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that holds very deep meaning for me,” he also writes on Instagram about the video, indicating that he will bring Maui to life himself. The new film, which is currently in development, will be produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Also among the executive producers is Auli’i Cravalho (22), who originally voiced the eponymous protagonist.
“Moiana”: That’s what it’s about
In the original film, Moiana is born with a unique and special connection to the mighty, open ocean. When her people and her homeland are threatened, she follows the call of the ocean and sets sail against her father’s wishes. She wants to track Maui, the demigod of wind and water, to bring back a magical artifact to a legendary island with him. Maui is reluctant to join Moiana. On their voyage of discovery they experience some adventures and experience strong headwinds.
