Minority Research: Collecting DNA Data Comes under Criticism – Knowledge

When bioinformatician Yves Moreau wrote an article in the journal Human Genetics discovered, who describes the “male genetic landscape of China” on the basis of almost 38,000 Y-STR sequences, the alarm bells rang for him. Y-STR stands for Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat polymorphism, repetitive sections of DNA that are often used in forensic examinations. Some of the samples were from Uyghurs and other minorities in China. Moreau was skeptical whether they had consented to the use of their genetic data or understood that China could use them to profile their people. In June 2020, he asked the journal’s editors to withdraw the “unacceptable” publication.
