Ministry of Finance plans: 83 billion euros for energy price brakes

Status: 06.11.2022 23:34

In the coming year, 83 billion euros are to be made available for price brakes on electricity and gas. This emerges from the economic plan for the 200 billion aid package. More than half of the money should therefore be spent in 2023.

The Ministry of Finance under Christian Lindner expects expenditures of 83 billion euros in the coming year for the planned price brakes for energy. This emerges from the business plan for the 200 billion special fund and the revised draft budget for 2023, which is available to the dpa and Reuters news agencies.

The 200 billion euros should last until 2024, but according to the plan, more than half should already be spent in the coming year. 15 billion euros are to be used to save the gas supplier Uniper.

Agreed measures incorporated

According to the plan, Lindner’s house is also planning to provide 153 million euros more for integration courses for Ukrainian refugees and 140 million euros more for the PCK refinery in Schwedt in Brandenburg. The plant is important for the supply of north-east Germany and was placed under federal administration because it belongs to a subsidiary of the Russian oil company Rosneft.

There are also numerous relief measures that have already been decided, such as the heating cost subsidy and the housing benefit reform with additional costs of 2.2 billion euros alone. According to the draft, the decision not to let the CO2 price rise in the coming year will also cost the federal government around 2 billion euros.

Amount of new debt still unclear

It is not clear how much new debt is to be taken on. However, it is foreseeable that more loans will be permitted than previously thought due to the poor economic expectations. In return, Lindner must also expect more expenses. According to the Minister of Finance, the interest payments on old loans alone should add up to 38 billion euros.
