Mini submarine – the “Nemo” would make James Bond jealous

While the mere mortals treat themselves to a paddling pool for the garden this summer, there is a completely different gimmick for the wealthy: the mini submarine “Nemo” from the Dutch manufacturer U-Boat Worx.
The mini submarine “Nemo” is smaller than a sailboat and about the size of two jet skis. It therefore fits easily on a trailer and could also be transported with a pick-up. Their achievements can make a James Bond jealous. After all, the “Nemo” can dive up to 100 meters deep. Such a powerful submarine has never been seen before in this size. U-Boat Worx hopes to be able to address a larger group of customers with the compact model.
“Personal submarines are an exciting and impressive addition to any toy closet and are becoming increasingly stylish and sought-after, especially for owners who want adventurous itineraries,” said Julia Simpson, manager at SuperYachtsMonaco, to Forbes. Adventurous owners of super yachts would like to go on a voyage of discovery and take a dinghy with them for such excursions. And of course a submarine is a particularly eye-catching addition.
Small dimensions, great performance
The “Nemo” is not so big that the whole super yacht has to be constructed for the transport of the submarine. Weighing only 2500 kilograms, the “Nemo” is the lightest manned submersible that has ever been built. It’s also only 155 centimeters high. Although the “Nemo” is very compact, it offers space for two passengers under the dome, which allows a breathtaking view of the underwater world. Under water the “Nemo” reaches a comfortable swimming speed of 3 knots, which is about 5.5 km / h. But at 100 meters, “Nemo” can not only dive very deep, but also very long: the mini submarine can travel for eight hours.
The computer goes with it
You dive with the “Nemo” to experience the underwater world up close. The transparent acrylic glass spherical window of the “Nemo” was specially designed to look outside. A 12 day training course is offered to all buyers. That should be enough to become a certified captain on the mini submarine. Because the “Nemo” largely supports the pilot and can automatically maintain course and depth. The occupants do not even have to steer themselves, the “Nemo” can also be operated remotely from the mother ship or from the coast.
Prices start at around one million euros. An optional gripper arm such as treasure hunters costs extra. That sounds like a lot, but it undercuts the other providers. Because the “Nemo” is mass-produced, a novelty for a private submarine. She still looks good. The “Nemo” received a Red Dot Award for its successful design.
