Latvia tests German Iris-T anti-aircraft system
The purchase of the German Iris-T air defense system is said to be the largest arms investment by Estonia and Latvia since 1991. However, a few more tests will be carried out first.
She hopes that the tests will be completed soon. The main aim is to find out which specifications of the weapon system are most suitable and suitable for the army of the Baltic EU and NATO country, said Murniece.
Together with her Estonian counterpart Hanno Pevkur, Murniece had previously signed a framework agreement to purchase the system from the manufacturer Diehl Defense.
No further information was given as to how many Iris-T systems would be purchased and at what price. Accordingly, it will be the largest arms investment for both countries since Estonia and Latvia regained their independence in 1991. In a statement from the Estonian Center for Defense Investments in Tallinn, a contract value of around 400 million euros was mentioned; there is currently no information about the Latvian share.
