Mike Pence agrees to testify before grand jury investigating Donald Trump

This is potentially crucial testimony that Congress has never been able to obtain. While a judge last week ordered Mike Pence to appear before a federal grand jury investigating Trump’s efforts to hold on to power between the presidential race and the assault on Capitol Hill, an adviser to the former vice-president president indicated on Wednesday that the latter would not appeal.

However, it is not excluded that Donald Trump, who sought to block the testimony of all his relatives, will file an appeal himself.

Potential Pence-Trump duel in the primary

Mike Pence had obtained a partial victory last week: the judge had recognized that in view of his position as President of the Senate during the certification of the results, Pence had the right to refuse to discuss his actions on the day of the attack on the Capitol. But he will have to provide answers to any questions about potential crimes committed by Donald Trump as part of the investigation taken over by Special Prosecutor Jack Smith. The latter looks at both the violence of January 6, but also on Donald Trump’s efforts to put pressure on local elected officials and on Mike Pence to prevent the certification of the verdict of the ballot boxes.

Indicted in New York on Tuesday in the Stormy Daniels case, Donald Trump is seeking a new term in 2024 and Mike Pence could be among those who will challenge him for the Republican nomination. The televised debates promise to be animated.
