It may sound alarmist, it may sound apocalyptic, but it’s like this: The midterm elections this Tuesday are likely to be the last at least reasonably fair elections in the USA for the foreseeable future. The United States of America is as good as lost as a functioning democracy for the time being. This has a lot to do with Donald Trump, but there is one other politician that history will not judge kindly. Mitch McConnell, leader of the Senate Republican, could have done the country a service, he could have made sure that the US left the abyss and found its way back to decency and sanity. He let that chance slip by.
