Middle school student falls ill during field trip and dies after streptococcal A infection

An 11-year-old boy died early last week from a streptococcal A infection in Bordeaux (Gironde), reports South West . The child, who attended a college in the Landes, would have contracted the bacteria during a school trip to the Landes coast. Doctors have not yet established the precise origin of his infection.

The child was quickly transferred to the Layné hospital in Mont-de-Marsan then to the Bordeaux University Hospital, given the seriousness of his condition. Despite the efforts of medical teams, he developed sepsis and died.

An open listening cell

A listening cell was set up in the victim’s college to support students and staff. However, local authorities remain reassuring. Indeed, they emphasize that Streptococcus A has a limited contagious nature, and that there is no ongoing epidemic.

“We have taken collective measures for everyone in contact with this young boy. Families are encouraged to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of angina.”explained to our colleagues Damien Sainte-Croix, public health doctor at the ARS des Landes.
