Middle East Conflict: Bulletproof Vests for First Responders – Politics

The Red Crescent, a counterpart to the Red Cross, reports violence against Palestinian first responders. They are increasingly being attacked by Israeli soldiers – and need more protection equipment.

Nidal Abu Gharbia stands at the door of his ambulance, his elbows casually propped on the rolled-down window. Cars line up behind him, waiting to pass through the Qalandia checkpoint from Jerusalem to the West Bank. You can see people on a bridge – they cross the border on foot that evening. Abu Gharbia is 53 years old and wears a red life jacket with the logo of the Palestinian Red Crescent (PRCS), the Islamic equivalent of the Red Cross. “I’ve given birth here and seen people die,” he says, pointing across the parking lot where his ambulance is parked.
