Somewhat surprisingly, Microsoft and Amazon have now announced the end of the Windows subsystem for Android and the underlying Amazon app store. The ambitious project is therefore stopped before it was actually finished. The subsystem and the Amazon Appstore have not yet progressed beyond preview status and are now being buried prematurely. The discontinuation of the project on March 5, 2025 should not have a direct impact on Android apps already installed under Windows 11, “but over time some applications may no longer work properly,” says Amazon. Microsoft released the last update for the Windows subsystem for Android in October 2023, raising the platform to version 2309.40000.8.0. Afterwards there was no longer any sign of life from the project.
