Microsoft discontinues Windows subsystem for Android, Amazon closes Appstore

Somewhat surprisingly, Microsoft and Amazon have now announced the end of the Windows subsystem for Android and the underlying Amazon app store. The ambitious project is therefore stopped before it was actually finished. The subsystem and the Amazon Appstore have not yet progressed beyond preview status and are now being buried prematurely. The attitude comes as a surprise, but is not an exception when it comes to Microsoft Killed by Microsoft portrayed.

The Windows subsystem for Android follows prominent predecessors such as Cortana, Windows Phone, Lumia and Microsoft Kinect, all of which ended up in the digital software and hardware graveyard for discontinued projects.

Amazon Appstore is being removed from Windows 11 today

As of today, the Amazon Appstore, which provided access to corresponding Android apps as the basis for the Windows subsystem for Android, will be removed from the Microsoft Store for Windows 11. Support for the Amazon Appstore and the apps obtained through it will end according to an email from Amazon on March 5, 2025, as well as the official FAQ can be seen.

Microsoft will end support for the Windows Subsystem for Android on March 5, 2025. As a result, the Amazon Appstore will no longer be available for download through the Microsoft Store on Windows 11 devices.

WSA is essential for users to run Android apps on Windows 11, and the discontinuation of WSA means the Amazon Appstore will no longer be supported on Windows devices.

The discontinuation of the project on March 5, 2025 should not have a direct impact on Android apps already installed under Windows 11, “but over time some applications may no longer work properly,” says Amazon. There is now also a note about the setting in the official documentation for the Windows subsystem for Android.
