Microsoft data center: This is how the billion-dollar deal in North Rhine-Westphalia went – Economy

For a few days now, the yardstick for the future of Germany as a business location has been a field in Bedburg, right next to the A61. Hundreds of meters long in both directions, plowed over, a few stakes driven in. There is water in many furrows from the drizzle. If this field didn’t happen to be the hope of the Rhenish district: no one would be interested in it. This was the case across the region until last Thursday when the news came across the ticker that has electrified the Rhineland ever since: Microsoft is investing a lot of money in new data centers. Not in the USA, not in Asia. But in Europe, in Germany and a good part of it here: in the fields.
