Michelin stars 2023: These are the best restaurants in Germany

Jan Hartwig did it: After the top chef had hung up his chef’s jacket in the “Atelier” restaurant and said goodbye to his three Michelin stars, he stormed back into the culinary olympus in seven-league boots. He gets three stars for his restaurant “Jan”. There were standing ovations at the Michelin Guide awards ceremony in Karlsruhe – and wet eyes.

Hartwig is not the only one who was surprised by the award. Christian Bau, who was able to defend his three stars, also won the Mentor Chef Award and was so touched that his voice broke. “I expected everything but that,” he said. But the winner of the evening is a woman: Alina Meissner. She cooked up the first star for the “Bebrout” and was also awarded the Young Chef Award 2023.

Award of the Michelin Guide 2023

1 Michelin star

More than 30 restaurants can look forward to their first star, including three in Freiburg im Breisgau alone and one purely vegetarian. After all, two cooks were also awarded.

2 Michelin stars

Germany can call eight new two-star restaurants its own. Thorsten Bender can also be happy. After his colleagues were already on the stage, he was told by the presenter that his restaurant “sein” had been removed from the one-star list. Emotions boiled over when he understood that this was not a descent, but an ascent.

green stars

The green stars are also shining brighter and brighter in Germany. 16 new restaurants can now also adorn themselves with the sustainability award. This brings the total to 72.

3 Michelin stars

All nine restaurants that were already awarded three Michelin stars in 2022 will remain 3-star restaurants. Jan Hartwig got three stars with his Munich restaurant “Jan”, which opened only five months ago. He is now among the top 140 chefs in the world.
