There will be five on the starting line. The Republicans confirmed, Thursday, November 4, that five candidatures will be put to the vote of the members of the party gathered in Congress from December 1 to 4 in order to choose their candidate for the presidential election 2022. The five candidates having collected at least the 250 sponsorships needed are Michel Barnier, Xavier Bertrand, Eric Ciotti, Philippe Juvin and Valérie Pécresse. Only Denis Payre failed to garner sufficient support to run.

“This campaign is going well, there is a positive state of mind between the candidates, the candidate teams as well – it’s night and day with 2016”, noted the president of the LR group to the Assembly, Damien Abad. “There is a real ideological convergence” between Michel Barnier, Xavier Bertrand and Valérie Pécresse, he also assured, considering that “the stake will be to gather behind “ the winner, “what we missed last time”.
