Dumbledore actor Michael Gambon dies at the age of 82

Millions of Harry Potter fans know him as Dumbledore: Irish-British actor Michael Gambon has died at the age of 82.

The actor Michael Gambon, best known for his role as Albus Dumbledore in the “Harry Potter” films, is dead. As his family announced on Thursday, he died in hospital of pneumonia at the age of 82. The Brit played the head of the Hogwarts magic school from the third episode onwards after his predecessor, the Irish actor Richard Harris, died in 2002.

“Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside,” the family said in a statement.

During his career spanning approximately 50 years, Gambon has worked in film, television, radio and theater. He has won a television award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) four times. His most famous films – apart from his six “Harry Potter” films – include “Sleepy Hollow” by Tim Burton and “Gosford Park” by Robert Altman.
