Miami Masters: Alexander Zverev defeats Kokkinakis and is in the quarterfinals – the ticker to read

Alexander Zverev has reached the quarterfinals at the ATP Masters in Miami. The Olympic champion ultimately prevailed confidently 6: 4, 6: 4 against Thanasi Kokkinakis, who surprisingly won the doubles title at the Australian Open at the beginning of the year with partner and buddy Nick Kyrgios.

In the first set, after a balanced start, Zverev managed the decisive break to make it 3: 2, in the second round the clear favorite took the serve from his opponent, who was listed in 97th position, at the same time.

He didn’t have to fend off a single breakball himself. After 1:31 hours he converted his first match point.

INFO – Goodbye!

With that, Robert Bauer says goodbye to what’s happening in Miami and wishes you a nice evening. At Eurosport.de you can of course follow the other matches of the Masters in live scoring. Until next time!

7:50 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6, 4: 6

That’s it! Zverev served the match without any problems and thus made it perfect for the round of eight. The Hambuger once again unpacks an ace and a forehand winner and converts his first match point after 1:36 hours and another unforced error from Kokkinakis.

7:48 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6, 4: 5

And the Australian does that extremely confidently. Zverev isn’t putting up too much resistance this time either, and for good reason: in this phase of the tournament, the motto is to conserve energy if it’s possible. Kokkinakis is thus 4: 5, but Zverev will shortly serve to advance to the quarterfinals.

7:45 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6, 3: 5

Sensational volley from Zverev! The 24-year-old performs magic with the clear lead behind him and once again closes the net. When the score was 40:15, the Olympic champion made a double mistake and gave Kokkinakis hope again. However, a cracking backhand winner nips them in the bud – 5: 3 for Zverev. Kokkinakis will soon serve against the loss of the match.

7:41 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6, 3: 4

That went quickly: Kokkinakis hits back to zero and shortens to 3: 4. However, this time Zverev is not putting up much resistance. The Hamburg player only has to serve twice to win the quarter-final ticket. The next opponent would be the Norwegian Ruud, who easily prevailed against Cameron Norrie (6: 3, 6: 4).

7:39 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6, 2: 4

Ace, smash, winner – this is how you confirm a break. Zverev is not naked when he serves and now even provides a few highlights. Kokkinakis has little to oppose at this stage of the match.

7:34 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6, 2: 3

This time, Kokkinakis can no longer pull his head out of the loop on his own serve. At 15:40 from the Australian’s point of view, it’s Zverev’s breakballs again. However, the number 97 in the world can initially fend off this. Kokkinakis can no longer counter the third chance that Zverev subsequently developed. The Hamburger closes well on the net with his forehand and takes his opponent’s serve. As in the first set, Zverev gets the break to make it 3: 2.

7:28 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6, 2: 2

Quite confidently what Zverev fabricates here in the Hard Rock Stadium. The German number one does not show any weaknesses and makes it 2: 2 in a quick run.

7:23 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6, 2: 1

Unchanged picture in sentence two: While Zverev has almost no problems with his own serve and has not yet allowed a single break chance, the winner of the Adelaide ATP tournament has to do everything to keep his service. When the score was 40:15, Kokkinakis made another unnecessary forehand mistake and brought Zverev back again. However, the 25-year-old can again rely on his serve and goes in front again. Afterwards, however, he must be treated.

7:17 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6, 1: 1

Nothing more to get for Kokkinakis on Zverev’s serve. The German equalizes to zero in less than two minutes to make it 1-1.

7:15 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6, 1: 0

Kokkinakis opens set two and has to tremble again. At first it looks like a sovereign service game when the score is 30:0, but Zverev bites his way and equalizes after two unforced errors by the qualifier to 30:30. With an ace and a very strong passing ball, Kokkinakis then took the 1-0 lead in the second round.

7:10 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 6

Sparkling service game! The 24-year-old gets the first set with zero. In total, Zverev only gave up seven points in his own service. So far, the Hamburger has fully lived up to his role as a favourite.

7:06 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 4: 5

Zverev is the much more active player in the first round. Kokkinakis’ two three-set matches in the previous rounds (against Diego Schwartzman and Kudla) may have cost the 25-year-old too much strength. With a backhand winner worth seeing when the score was 30:40 from Zverev’s point of view, he forces Kokkinakis to make a debut again. After 47 minutes it was Zverev’s set ball after a crashing forehand from Hamburg.

Kokkinakis can initially fend off this, but his first double mistake gave Zverev the next set ball. The Australian defends himself bravely again and subsequently fends off the Hamburg player’s third set ball. With an ace and another point gained after the first serve, Kyrgios’ buddy actually defends his service and makes it 4: 5. However, Zverev will soon serve to win the set.

6:56 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 3: 5

Tight box! At 15:30 from Zverev’s point of view, a backhand from the German sails dangerously close in the direction of the side. However, the ball is passed well, much to Kokkinakis’ annoyance. Instead of a break chance for the Australian, it’s 30:30 – and Zverev then holds his service thanks to his strong first serve. So far, Zverev has scored around 80 percent of the points when his first serve landed in the opponent’s field. Kokkinakis serves shortly against losing the first set.

6:50 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 3: 4

Great return from Zverev! The Olympic champion doesn’t give his opponent a chance with a remarkable backhand cross and makes it 30:0 early on when Kokkinaki serves. Although the qualifier serves better afterwards, Zverev has the chance of a double break thanks to another backhand winner. However, he carelessly ignores this possibility when he hits a supposedly easy backhand out of bounds. The favorite now stays on the trigger and gets another break chance shortly afterwards. This time, a forehand from Hamburg just sails out. To the delight of Kokkinakis, who then forces Zverev to make two mistakes and wins the exhausting service game – only 3: 4.

18:41 – Kokkinakis – Zverev 2: 4

All in all, a stronger start for the German number one: Zverev ultimately confidently confirms the break on his own serve. First he scores with a forehand volley at the net, then he follows up with a backhand winner. However, Kokkinakis is now a little more active and shortens it again to 30:40. With a powerful first serve, Zverev then takes the 4: 2 lead.

6:35 p.m. – Kokkinakis – Zverev 2: 3

This time Zverev gets the first break chance: A forehand from Kokkinakis sails sideways at 30:30 and gives the Hamburg player the first break opportunity – and he can’t be asked twice. With a powerful return winner, Zverev takes the serve from his opponent for the first time.

6:30 p.m. Kokkinakis 2-2 Zverev

The forehand longline is Zverev’s parade shot in the initial phase – the number three in the world scores again and again with that shot. At 0:40, Kokkinakis comes back to 30:40 thanks to two unforced errors by Zverev – but a strong first serve then ensures the favorite wins the game.

6:25 p.m. Kokkinakis 2-1 Zverev

So far, Kokkinakis has not revealed any weaknesses with its own service. After the next outstanding forehand winner, Zverev can briefly sniff a breakball at 30:30, but the 25-year-old then serves in a concentrated manner and thus forces the Hamburg player to make mistakes. After eleven minutes it is 2-1 for the Australian.

6:21 p.m. Kokkinakis 1-1 Zverev

Confident start of the German with his own service: With two strong first serves and two forehand winners, Zverev is 1: 1. The Hamburger leaves the Australian only one point in his first service game – through a double fault.

18:18 Kokkinakis 1-0 Zverev

It starts with a bang: Zverev attacks the Australian qualifier in his first service game and scores with a forehand winner worth seeing. The Hamburger then made two unforced errors, so that a little later Kokkinakis was able to seal the 1-0 lead with his first ace.

6:15 p.m. Kokkinakis-Zverev

The German number one, meanwhile, won the coin toss and opted for setback. Kokkinakis will thus open the match in a few moments.

18:11 Ruud 6-3 Norrie, 1-1

On the Grandstand, Casper Ruud (Norway) and Cameron Norrie (Great Britain) determine Zverev’s or Kokkinakis’ next opponent at the same time. The first round clearly went to the Norwegian.

18:05 – Kokkinakis – Zverev

The two players entered Hard Rock Stadium. So the round of 16 game will start shortly.
