With the MG Cyberster, a sports car with an electric motor and more than 500 hp is in the starting blocks. The Chinese manufacturer promises a powerful roadster that should leave competitors like Tesla and Porsche out in the rain.

The market offer of roadster models is small. Now the Chinese are putting the pressure on. The British brand MG, which has long since belonged to the Chinese automobile manufacturer SAIC Motor, presented a fully electric roadster at the current auto show in Shanghai. The Cyberster was already shown as a concept study last year, but is now actually going to go into series production.

The two-seater features a long bonnet, low front end and curved surfaces. The short rear is based on the design of the German aerodynamics pioneer Wunibald Kamm. The Cyberster also has oval headlights, which – like the lighting elements at the rear – consist of LED lights. In addition, the vehicle developed in London has scissor doors and a soft top. It is intended to pay homage to the popular roadsters in MG’s history, following the MG TF roadster. This was part of the manufacturer’s vehicle range until 2011.

MG Cyberster: Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds

In terms of technical characteristics, MG announces “state-of-the-art driving assistance systems” and a modern interior. However, the company has not yet given any specific details. So far, the manufacturer has hardly revealed any other information about the e-car. However, according to information published by the Ministry of Information and Technology (MIIT), the Cyberster is around 4.54 meters long and 1.90 meters wide. Its height is almost 1.30 meters. Depending on the version, the sports car weighs a total of 2075 to 2210 kilos.

While the entry-level version has 314 hp rear-wheel drive, the top-of-the-line version uses all-wheel drive with one motor each on the front and rear axles. The 204 hp engine from the MG4 EV compact car is installed at the front and a 340 hp engine at the rear. With a total output of 544 hp, the Cyberster should be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds. The CATL battery packs should be able to take the two-seater up to 800 kilometers.

Tesla and Porsche also build roadsters

The Cyberster is expected to come onto the European market in summer 2024; a homologation of the sports car is still pending. MG is still ahead of the competition. Tesla has also announced a new roadster, but the US electric car manufacturer has postponed the market launch several times. Porsche has also announced an electric Boxster, but that too is still in the development phase.

The MG Cyberster is intended to expand the company’s primarily electric fleet with a sporty electric model. It is not yet known what the car will cost.
