Elections are coming up in Mexico. The candidates’ schedules are accordingly full. However, one event had a tragic end.

When a stage collapsed due to strong winds during a campaign event in At least five people have died and 50 others have been injured in Mexico. This was announced by the governor of the northeastern state of Nuevo León, Samuel García, at the scene of the accident, as the N+ television station reported live. The accident occurred on a baseball field in the municipality of San Pedro Garza García in the greater industrial metropolis of Monterrey.

“I regret the accident in San Pedro Garza García,” wrote President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on the online platform X on Wednesday evening (local time). Citing the regional government, he initially spoke of four dead and 15 injured. According to media reports, there is also a child among the victims.

Incident in the middle of the Mexican election campaign

Presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Maynez from the small center-left Movimiento Ciudadano party was on stage with a mayoral candidate and other people when the accident occurred. He remained uninjured. Videos circulated on social media showing how the supports supporting the stage structure collapsed in stormy weather and panic broke out. A huge screen then fell onto the podium where Álvarez Máynez and other people were.

Presidential elections will take place in Mexico on June 2nd. Álvarez Máynez from the center-left Movimiento Ciudadano party has made a name for himself with his contributions to online networks and his confident demeanor at the presidential candidates’ debates.
