Metabolism types and losing weight: Why “wasters” have it easier

“Prodigal” metabolic types have an easier time losing weight than “frugal” ones. But how do you find out which type you belong to? And can “waste” be trained? A team at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein is looking for answers to help you lose weight.

At ten o’clock it is served: milk chocolate with white cookies, broken into pieces of different sizes, a good one and a half bars. Wiebke Diederich, doctoral student at the Institute for Diabetology and Clinical Metabolism Research at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel, stands smiling in front of the two test subjects and hands them two bowls – 162 grams of chocolate for Sabrina Algermissen, 184 grams for Rainer Ludwig. Converted into calories, this corresponds to approximately half of your basal metabolic rate – the amount of energy that the body uses even when completely resting.
