The 2014 world champion Mesut Özil ended his football career with immediate effect. “I’ve had the great privilege of being a professional for 17 years and I’m eternally grateful for this opportunity,” the 34-year-old wrote on Twitter on Wednesday to his more than 26 million followers. Most recently, Özil played for Basaksehir Istanbul.
