Users worldwide were unable to send or receive messages via the WhatsApp messenger service in the morning. A spokesman said they were trying to restore service as soon as possible.

Apparently, a far-reaching disruption has occurred with the WhatsApp messenger service. In the morning, sending and receiving messages using the service’s app was not possible. Users of the messenger service report on Twitter and other channels that they can no longer send messages. The complaints piled up in the online networks.

According to initial findings, the disruption affects users worldwide and both Android smartphones and Apple iPhones. The website Downdetector, which collects reports of disruptions to online services, saw a massive spike in reports about WhatsApp from around 9am. Many also reported a platform failure on the Alle disturbances.de portal.

The reason for the disruption in several countries was not initially known. “We are aware that some people are currently experiencing issues sending messages and we are working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as soon as possible,” said a spokesman for WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta Platforms.

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, bought WhatsApp in 2014. The service is very popular, especially outside the US where many people use it for everyday communication.
