Memoirs: “My friend Anne Frank” by Hannah Pick-Goslar

Hannah Pick-Goslar remembers the Holocaust – and her friend Anne Frank.

16-year-old Hannah is waiting with her little sister Gabi for a train in which the Nazis want to transport prisoners like her from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp to Theresienstadt. It is a spring day in 1945, shortly before liberation by the Allies. The beautiful weather does not match the horror that is taking place around them, it does not match their state of mind; the two sisters are malnourished, sick, and do not know what awaits them.

A Wehrmacht soldier who is not part of the concentration camp guard asks five-year-old Gabi if she wants a cookie. The girl who has spent half her life in camps asks back: “What is a cookie?”
