Meghan and Harry: The ten biggest revelations of the new Netflix documentary

In their new Netflix documentary, Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry reveal comparatively little that is new. But there are definitely a few crackers.

Countless press reports, documentaries, interviews and books have been published since Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s love became official. With their Netflix documentary, the two royal exiles want to tell their version of the story. Again after her scandalous interview with Oprah Winfrey. The most surprising moments.

“Harry & Meghan”: How they met

In episode one, the two tell how they met in July 2016. What nobody knew before: Harry saw Meghan for the first time on the Instagram profile of a mutual friend. She had posted a video there of herself and the actress putting a Snapchat dog filter over her face. Despite the filter, Harry was thrilled and contacted the mutual acquaintance. He wants to meet Meghan.

“I put our snapchat on Instagram and Prince Haz follows me (he’s a friend) he called me last night and was dying to meet you hehehe maybe I just need to set you up,” the friend wrote to Meghan. “Who is Prince Haz????” the actress replied. She then asked to see Harry’s private Instagram feed. “That’s the thing. People are like, ‘Did you google him?’ No. That’s your homework…you’re saying ‘let me see what they’re doing on their feed’, not what someone else is saying about them, but what they’re posting about themselves,” she explains in the documentary. Harry mainly published photos from Africa on his profile.

Meghan organized the second meeting

After their first hour-long meeting, Meghan wanted to see Prince Harry again. And she made that clear. “I called him that night and said, ‘I’m leaving the day after tomorrow, would you like to have dinner with me tomorrow night?’ And I’m sure he thought it was so bold and American,” she recalls.

The third date of the two was the joint trip to Botswana.

Last party on Halloween

Before the relationship between the two became public, Harry and Meghan only saw each other sporadically because she worked in Toronto and he worked as a royal. But the time was intense, the two reveal that again and again. In late October 2016, they learned from Prince William’s staff that the British press had gotten wind of the relationship and would break the story the next day.

To celebrate their last day “free”, the Sussexes decided to go out. Together with Princess Eugenie and her now husband Jack Brooksbank and a friend of Meghan’s, they celebrated a Halloween party in costumes. They would have “pulled the fuse of the fun grenade,” laughs Harry in the documentary.

Engagement interview was ‘staged reality show’

Royal fans got a first glimpse of their relationship during the official engagement interview at the end of 2017. Just like Prince William and Kate years before, Harry and Meghan talked about their love and their plans for the future. But today they see the TV moment with different eyes. Meghan calls the interview a “staged reality show”, they rehearsed the interview down to the last detail in advance.

She had guessed that Harry would propose to her because he had bought champagne. Otherwise he wouldn’t drink it. “I wanted to do it earlier because I had to ask my grandmother for permission, I couldn’t do it outside of the UK,” says Harry of the moment.

When Meghan met the Queen

The first royal Meghan met after Prince Harry was the late Queen Elizabeth II. “I mean, it’s unreal. There wasn’t a big ‘now you meet my grandmother’ moment,” she recalls in the documentary. “I didn’t know I was going to meet her until recently. We sat in the car and drove to the Royal Lodge for lunch and he [Harry] said, ‘Oh, my grandmother is here, she’ll be there after church.’ I remember that we were in the car and he was [Harry] said, ‘You know how to curtsey, don’t you?’. And I thought it was a joke,” explains the Duchess.

“It was so intense. And then when she left, Eugenie and Jack and Fergie were like, ‘You did great!’ (…) I didn’t know what I was doing,” she also reveals.

First meeting with William and Kate

But Meghan apparently teases Harry’s brother, Prince William, and his wife Catherine, the Princess of Wales. “I think I understood very quickly that the formality that prevails on the outside also extends on the inside,” she says.

“That there’s a forward-thinking way of being. And then you close the door and you’re like, ‘Oh great. Okay, now we can relax.’ But that formality carries over to both sides, and that was surprising to me,” she said, referring to Prince William and his wife. Because she also reports that she was barefoot when she first met the two and wore torn jeans.

Harry compares Meghan to Princess Diana

The parallels between Diana and Meghan have already been drawn in the past. Especially because Prince Harry himself kept mentioning his mother. He must protect his family because history must not repeat itself.

“A lot of what Meghan is and how she is is so similar to my mother. She has the same compassion. She has the same empathy. She has the same confidence. She has this warmth that she exudes,” says Harry in the documentary.

Racism in the Palace

Of course, the topic of racism also plays a major role in Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary. Meghan Markle met her future relatives at the Queen’s Christmas lunch in 2017. Among them: Princess Michael of Kent, who used to make racist comments and wore a racist piece of jewelery on her jacket.

“Sometimes in this family you’re more part of the problem than part of the solution. There’s a lot of unconscious bias. The thing about unconscious bias is that it’s actually nobody’s fault. But once it’s pointed out to you or it’s in recognized itself, then you have to eliminate them,” explains Harry. “That’s education. It’s awareness. It’s an ongoing process for everyone, including me,” he says.

Meghan’s mother knew quickly

Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland also has her say in the documentary. And she knew early on that things were serious between her daughter and the prince. “He was a six-foot-tall, handsome man with red hair, [er hatte] great manners. He was just really nice. They looked really happy together. He was the one,” she says in the film.

Harry talks about Nazi scandal

After the numerous headlines about Meghan and Harry, one almost forgets which scandals Harry fabricated in his time before the Duchess. Unforgettable, however, is the costume party to which the royal decided to wear a Nazi outfit in 2005.

“That was probably one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I was so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was do it right,” he says about it today.
