Meat industry – Tönnies loses sales – economy

The second year of Corona and a noticeable decline in meat consumption left clear traces in the balance sheet of the largest German slaughterhouse and meat company Tönnies in 2021. Annual sales fell by 11.4 percent to 6.2 billion euros, as the family company in Rheda-Wiedenbrück announced. Tönnies gave lower producer prices and reduced animal numbers in Germany as the reason. Clemens Tönnies speaks of an “unsatisfactory year” in the report. The industry was shaped by Corona and African swine fever. Due to the pandemic, restaurants and canteens were closed, the football stadiums remained empty, family celebrations and weddings were cancelled. Meat and sausage consumption has declined.
