A natural phenomenon in Mauritius is second to none. The sea seems to open up in front of the Le Morne Brabant mountain.

When one thinks of Mauritius, images of palm trees, white sand beaches and turquoise seas spring to mind. But there is said to be more there: a mysterious underwater waterfall! We took a close look at the natural phenomenon. Fake or real?

The stunning images are real and not made up. But what appears to be an underwater waterfall is actually an optical illusion. What looks to our eyes like water plunging into the depths is actually sand! The currents and the undertow of the ocean are so strong that the sand is washed away from the south-western coast of the island and carried into the lower-lying regions of the sea.

So is the waterfall real? no It’s a kind of “fall”, but unlike what the human eye sees, masses of sand instead of water fall into the depths. If you don’t really trust the pictures, you can also admire the spectacle via Google Maps – or make a detour to Mauritius on your next vacation and see the “Sandfall” for yourself.
