The violent attack on the SPD politician Matthias Ecke caused horror across the country. Now a young person has turned himself in to the police.

The Police in Dresden have identified a suspect after the attack on SPD European politician Matthias Ecke. A 17-year-old turned himself in at a station and admitted the crime, the investigators said on Sunday afternoon. The young person was then released again because there was no risk of escape, said a spokeswoman for the Saxon State Criminal Police Office, according to the DPA news agency.

The 41-year-old EU Parliament member Ecke was beaten up while hanging up election posters in the Dresden district of Striesen on Friday evening and had to be taken to hospital. A total of four people are said to have been involved in the attack. The group may also be responsible for a violent attack on a Green Party election worker that same evening. The investigations at the LKA are continuing.
