Matthias Brandt on the awarding of the Carl Zuckmayer Medal – Culture

Matthias Brandt about life as a shy person, his love of language – and about how he was once a “traitor to the people”.

When I was at the very beginning, as a young actor, on stage or in front of the camera, there was a fierce battle between two forces raging inside me: I really wanted to show myself and at the same time hide away. Sometimes the desire to show oneself predominated, but mostly the desire to be invisible. Every evening I was sick with stage fright. I was a shy person and stayed that way.
