For a long time he toyed with the idea of running for governor of Texas. Despite good poll numbers, Matthew McConaughey has now rejected this request.

Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger did it too: They both switched sides as successful actors and were elected Governor of California. Matthew McConaughey has also considered entering politics in the past few weeks and months. In March, he spoke on the podcast “The Balanced Voice” of “serious considerations” to run for governor of his home state Texas.

But that won’t happen for the time being. According to his own statements, the 52-year-old has decided against it. “It’s a humble and inspiring way to think about. It’s a path I don’t want to go at the moment,” said the 52-year-old in a video he shared on his Twitter account.

This is how Matthew McConaughey explains the waiver

In it the actor stands in front of the Texan flag and the star-spangled banner, and justifies this step: He would rather continue to support entrepreneurs, companies and foundations that serve and ensure prosperity at the same time. That is the American dream.

The acting star (“True Detective”, “Dallas Buyers Club”) would have a good chance of being elected by the citizens. A recently published poll in the state of Texas showed that the Oscar winner could count on 43 percent of the vote and would have a clear lead in a direct duel with Republican incumbent Gregory W. Abbott.

In the coming year, the state in the south of the USA will elect a new governor. With McConaughey’s rejection, Abbotts will probably duel against the Democrat Beto O’Rourke. According to recent polls, the Republican should win this election.

However, Matthew McConaughey could make a big impact with an election recommendation. Many reactions under his Twitter statement indicate who his followers are leaning towards: They want Beto O’Rourke as the new governor.
