The demonstrations against right-wing extremism in German cities over the weekend felt and looked like massive, huge Sunday walks. The question of whether “the middle” of society was evident here may give the wrong impression. The “middle” refers to a party landscape from left to right, to a wide range between edges. Or to a sociological average, in class position and attitudes, to ideas of normality. All of this is difficult to pin down with hundreds of thousands of participants who appear with a wide variety of signs, signs and slogans.
