Whether glittery, fluffy or just sweet: On Saturday evening at ProSieben, mysterious, singing figures swept across the stage again. Because: “The Masked Singer” has started its ninth season. Eight masked celebrities sang for the audience and the guessing team at the start. There was an innovation at the council table just in time for the new season. Instead of singer Rea Garvey, musician Álvaro Soler took a seat alongside Ruth Moschner.

The rate team guest on Saturday evening was investigative journalist Jenke von Wilmsdorff. However, it quickly became clear that his instincts were still not sharpened by the masked people singing.

Ruth Moschner teaches Jenke von Wilsdorff

For example, he typed “Giovanni Zarrelli” after an oversized garden gnome who introduced himself as Santa Claus’ half-brother sang “Love Runs Out.” “Zarrella,” corrected rate veteran Moschner and pointed out to von Wilmsdorff that he was currently having a live show on ZDF. “Today?” the journalist asked. “Live is always today,” replied Moschner, amused.

There was also wild speculation about the “Mustang”, about which there was information that it was a formerly very successful star who was now celebrating his big comeback.

Florian Silbereisen with Helene Fischer tutoring?

While Moschner and her colleagues speculated about who had just sung “Eye of the Tiger”, the name also came up: Florian Silbereisen. “No pop singer is so vain” that he hides in a costume, von Wilmsdorff pointed out.

He is a “great musician” who is “very sporty,” said Moschner. Two attributes that speak for Silbereisen. “A little tutoring from Helene Fischer, then tomorrow he’ll come down from the ceiling,” she joked.

The okapi has to go

It was not yet revealed on Saturday whether it was really Silbereisen. Instead of the Mustang, it was the colorful Okapi that got the fewest audience votes and had to take off the mask. In view of the evidence and the performance, Moschner’s advisory team was confused. “Amanda Lear,” Moschner typed hesitantly. Von Wilmsdorff speculated that it was probably a “Grande Dame” – and for once she was correct.

Because: When the mask fell, a disheveled Katja Ebstein emerged. “This is amazing!” said Moschner happily in front of the singer and actress. “How great, how great, how great!” cheered presenter Matthias Opdenhövel. He wanted to know from Ebstein whether she had had fun. “Yes,” she answered, not entirely convincingly, and added: “It was a sweaty affair!”

Technical breakdown during the final performance

Maybe she was hoping to be able to leave the stage quickly. When Opdenhövel announced that she should sing her song again, she said something a little enthusiastic: “Oh dear heavens.” Unfortunately, Ebstein’s final performance just didn’t go smoothly: “When does this start?” Ebstein asked while the music was already playing. Apparently she couldn’t hear the music properly and missed her cue. “There’s nothing on here,” she said, pointing to her in-ear monitors.

Carpendale despairs of Katja Ebstein

Maybe it was also due to this technical glitch. But the fact is: When Annemarie Carpendale came on stage to interview Ebstein for her “Aftershow” magazine, she had a lot of trouble with the actress.

During the conversation, Ebstein held her okapi mask so that most of her face was hidden. When Carpendale offered to hold the head for her, she refused, explaining that she was holding the mask in front of her face because she didn’t have nice makeup, like her.

“That’s not an achievement!” commented the 78-year-old when Carpendale praised her performance. “I’m not a legend!” she also made it clear when the presenter spoke of her as one. Von Wilmsdorff also got rid of his fat. “This is now a comeback!” he explained about Ebstein. “No, I’ve never been away!” she replied dryly. However, she wanted to get away from the stage quickly that evening, as she made it clear. “Oh children, I’m so hot!” Ebstein complained. When her performance was finally over, she ran away at a brisk pace.

By the way, eight masked people will be performing again next week, despite Okapi’s farewell. Then the Martian mouse is there, who didn’t make it to the opening show on Saturday. Apparently because the journey was too far. Is that a clue to the person in the costume?
