Maserati suspends development of its electric Quattroporte

The Turin edition of the Italian daily Corriere della Sera publishes information according to which Maserati’s suppliers and subcontractors have received an e-mail containing two messages. On the one hand, they are asked to reduce their costs by 6%, in order to maintain a certain competitiveness in the electricity market. But at the same time, they are being asked to stop any development of elements intended for the future Quattroporte sedan, this itself being put on hold, without a date for resumption of work or launch being announced. A big blow for its suppliers, who had already been asked a year ago to reduce costs by 5-6%.

“On horseback” on Alfa

Officially, this refrigeration is partly explained by the fact that Maserati is re-examining its positioning strategy, among other things to avoid the Quattroporte being too close to the future Alfa Romeo Giulia. This should arrive in 2025 or 2026 in a purely electric version, and rumors announce the Quadrifoglio at around 1,000 hp. In fact, a Maserati has to find its place. But perhaps all this is just an excuse.

Maserati is not the only brand to “rethink” its strategy and delay electric models. The explanation may simply be that electric car sales are losing steam sooner than expected, and it is unwise to invest heavily in developing a car that will stay in dealerships. Another example from Stellantis (which also owns Maserati): the second generation of the electric Fiat 500, planned for 2027, is postponed to 2030.
