If you want to draw a conclusion from the first major retrospective of the photographer Mary Ellen Mark, which can be seen at the C/O Berlin, then it is with the full pathos of humanism: Human dignity is photogenic. This is not a question of aesthetics, but of respect. And Mark had that, regardless of whether she was photographing Hollywood stars, circus performers, sick people or all those who catapulted their biographies out of whatever the rest of the world might consider a value system.
