As a director, Martin Kušej is always good for a bang effect. With one such he has now ended the ongoing debate about his contract extension as director of the Vienna Burgtheater: by surprisingly throwing down the beggar and thus spitting at the feet of politics. While everyone was waiting on Tuesday for the responsible Austrian Secretary of State for Culture, Andrea Mayer, to finally announce her decision whether to extend Kušej’s contract or appoint someone else – possibly a woman – to the high post, the acting Burg boss announced his resignation in a press release : “My person and the entire Burgtheater were maneuvered into an unspeakable, damaging situation by the late and lengthy decision-making process on the future of the Burgtheater management,” it says. The “unrestricted trust on the part of the owner” as a basis for his work is no longer given. “Therefore, I am withdrawing my current application to continue my directorship with immediate effect.” boom
