Markus Söder warns of certainty of victory and practices it – opinion

Ten months before a state election that he has not yet won, the Bavarian Prime Minister is bringing another term into play in the 2028 election year. What kind of strategy is that supposed to be?

That was quite a thing when Markus Söder said in January 2018 that ten years were enough for a prime minister. He wasn’t even in office yet, but had already announced that he would resign in 2028 if he was elected by then. It should be a gesture of humility – and a sign that a politician is not clinging to power. Now Söder has thrown his mind games from back then in the bin. That smells like breaking a word. And is a remarkably unwise move for a clever strategist like Söder.
