Poorly explained and “hard to understand”: Söder criticizes the reduction of the recovered status

The reduction of the convalescent status by the Robert Koch Institute not only irritated many citizens, but also politicians. Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder criticized the decision on ZDF as “incomprehensible”.

This week, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) shortened the recovered status after surviving a corona infection from six to three months. This not only irritated many citizens, but also the state governments. “It surprised us all,” commented Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) on Thursday evening on the ZDF program “Maybrit Illner”. Berlin’s governing mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) agreed with him.

Markus Söder: The decision presents those who have recovered with a completely new situation

Söder called the RKI decision “a bit unfortunate and not very understandable”. Above all, there was a lack of a coherent justification. “In fact, it presents many recovered people with a completely new situation,” said Söder. The CSU boss suspected that one motive for the decision was “that everyone can be boosted again”. But that should have been explained, criticized Söder. “It seemed unjustified to many.” Giffey looked ahead. “It’s the way it is now,” said Berlin’s new head of government. It is now important to focus on the third vaccination.

Shortened convalescence status scientifically controversial

The infectiologist at the Schwabing Clinic, Clemens Wendtner, called the fact that the booster campaign was “again stimulated” by the reduction in the recovered status a “good side effect”. The basis of the RKI decision, however, is that Delta-Gesene could become infected with omicron after just three months and Omikron-Gesene could be infected with another corona variant in just as short a time, explained the Munich chief physician. The doctor also criticized the approach of the RKI. The decision was made very quickly and “the communication was not entirely successful”.

The decision of the RKI had caused annoyance, since the recovered status is now only valid for two months, since the status is only officially certified 28 days after a positive PCR test has been taken. Evidence from the beginning of October has now suddenly expired. Scientifically, the decision is considered controversial. The virologist Hendrik Streeck, member of the expert council of the federal government, criticized in the newspaper “Die Welt”: “In Switzerland, the convalescent status was recently extended to twelve months for good reasons. That precisely that status in Germany is reduced to three months, cannot be explained from my scientific knowledge.” The Düsseldorf immunologist Jörg Timm explained to Bayerischer Rundfunk that the protective effect of an infection that has already gone through (like a vaccination) is significantly reduced with Omikron, since the antibodies in the new variant do not bind so well to the virus.
