Before the quarter-final second leg in the Champions League it turned at FC Bavaria not just about the sporting situation against Villarreal. Rather, the focus was on the future of top striker Robert Lewandowski.

The rumor had already surfaced on Monday that the Pole was already in agreement with FC Barcelona. However, this rumor quickly turned out to be false. When asked about this, Bayern board member Oliver Kahn said before the Villarreal game on “Amazon Prime”: “Apparently there’s a competition out there: who will tell the biggest nonsense story about Lewandowski.”

Nevertheless, the former Bayern goalkeeper was asked about Lewandowski’s future. Kahn then said it was important to emphasize that “we have a contract with Robert that has one more season to go. We’ve always said we’re recording the talks. We started that a long time ago.”

The talks are still open and there is still no result. But then he states: “We definitely have Robert with us for another season. Robert knows what he has at Bayern. And we also know what we have in him.”

“We’re not crazy and we’re discussing a move from a player who scores 30 to 40 goals a season.”

When Amazon moderator Sebastian Hellmann then asked whether an early change this summer was therefore out of the question, Kahn was tough: “We’re not crazy and we’re discussing a move from a player who scores 30 to 40 goals a season.”

Following this statement, ex-Bayern striker and expert Mario Gomez also intervened. He criticizes Lewandowski for remaining calm about such rumors and not “putting the pedal to the metal”. Then he adds: “Personally, I think he’s a great striker. But for the overall situation, it’s too much selfishness for me when it comes to my own future.”

What Gomez means: After his opinion the confusion surrounding Lewandowski also distracts his teammates: “I think all these disruptive fires also do something to the team.”
