Maria Theresia, the pious Jew-hater – Munich

Who is writing history? The powerful or those on the margins? What shapes the way current generations view their ancestors? The award-winning author and filmmaker Monika Czernin loves to devote herself to historical material – and she always brings people and topics to light that others easily overlook. This also applies to her latest film “Maria Theresa’s Dark Side – The Expulsion of the Jews from Prague”. In the documentary play, she excitingly and impressively describes a momentous decision made by the Habsburg queen. Maria Theresa, often glorified, was a skilled ruler and mother of 16 children. But also a notorious Jew-hater. The film tells a piece of Jewish history at the turning point between the Enlightenment and absolutism. And it is highly relevant in a time of resurgent anti-Semitism.
