Maradona jersey will be auctioned: The Shirt of God – Panorama

In this jersey, Diego Maradona scored both the goal and the scandalous goal of the century in the same game. Now it’s up for auction – at a reasonably outrageous price.

Pictured: the jersey worn by the divine Diego Armando Maradona on June 22, 1986 in Mexico. World Cup quarter-finals, Argentina vs. England, Maradona scored twice in this shirt. In the first, the hand of God had its fingers in the game, in the second he dribbled around all opponents. So Maradona scored both the scandal goal of the century and the goal of the century in the same game. He was wearing this jersey, number 10, the jersey of all jerseys. Every football fan has to cry with happiness just seeing it. It is now being auctioned at Sotheby’s, the auction starts on April 20th.

The shirt previously belonged to England international Steve Hodge, who swapped it with Maradona after the game. Hodge later wrote his autobiography, it’s called, of course, “The man with Maradona’s shirt”. He and Maradona met in the players’ tunnel, “we looked at each other and I tugged at my shirt”, the invitation to swap. I have no idea what Maradona later did with Hodge’s shirt. In any case, Hodge gave the Maradona jersey to a museum, where it was kept in a species-appropriate manner. But it was still his, Steve Hodge. Now he wants to sell it.

However, Maradona’s daughter Dalma now claims that the shirt is from the first half and that the goals in the second half were scored by Maradona in a different shirt. But at Sotheby’s they say they’ve checked everything, and Hodge wrote as much in his book: The shirt up for auction is the real deal. Revenue of seven million euros is expected, which is a reasonable price for a piece of fabric of dreams.
