According to local authorities, more than 100 people were killed in attacks by armed gunmen on several villages in Nigeria’s Plateau state over the weekend.

“The attacks were well coordinated. As many as 20 different communities were attacked by the bandits,” said Acting Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area in Plateau State, Monday Kassah. “We recovered 113 bodies from these communities. We found more than 300 injured.” Kassah did not say who was responsible for the attacks.

The army initially reported an attack on a town on Sunday that left 16 dead. Governor Caleb Mutfwang spoke of a “barbaric, brutal” attack.

The region lies between the north of Nigeria, which is predominantly inhabited by Muslims, and the south, which is predominantly inhabited by Christians. There are repeated violent clashes there between cattle breeders, who are mostly Muslims, and farmers, who are mostly Christians. Jihadists and criminal gangs are also active in the region.
