Many accidents caused by ice and snow – Bavaria

Snowfall has again given the police in Bavaria many operations. Numerous trees collapsed in the Kulmbacher Oberland under the snow masses. A tree fell on the road on Tuesday, hitting a car. The driver was unharmed, police said on Wednesday.

Not only the masses of snow, but also the mirror-smooth roads caused problems in Upper Franconia. Near Kupferberg (Kulmbach district), a 25-year-old drove his car off the road and landed in a ditch. The driver was not injured. After the accident, the car initially remained in the ditch. The road was too slippery even for the towing service. In Lichtenberg (district of Hof), a driver skidded and overturned his car. He too was unharmed.

In southern Bavaria, too, ice and wetness turned the streets into slides. In most cases, according to the police, it was only damage to the bodywork. Several cars went off the road and ended up in a ditch. In Böhen (Unterallgäu district), four occupants of a car were slightly injured. There was another slight injury at Deggendorf. A sprinter skidded and crashed into the car of a 24-year-old. The unidentified driver of the sprinter fled the scene of the accident on foot.

There was a road block on Tuesday evening between Ludwigschorgast and Marktleugast (Kulmbach district) on federal highway 289. Several cars and trucks had swerved and had blocked the roadway. Also on Autobahn 7 near Bad Grönenbach in Unterallgäu, a truck slid over the roadway, crashed into the crash barrier and blocked the Autobahn in the direction of Füssen (Ostallgäu district).

In the Chiemgau and Berchtesgaden Alps there is a high to very high risk of avalanches. The Bavarian avalanche warning service estimates the danger above the tree line at level 4 of 5. Even below that, the danger remains significant. It will remain smooth in the eastern low mountain ranges and the Alps. The meteorologists from the German Weather Service expect only little fresh snow. Thaw is to be expected in the lowlands.
