Manchester United’s caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick made surprising statements about Darren Fletcher’s activities at the Red Devils. The long-time midfielder from ManUnited has been technical director for the English record champions for almost a year, but Rangnick still doesn’t know what exactly he does even after three months in office

“What is his role within the club? I don’t really know to be honest,” said Rangnick, but added: “I can only say what happens in the training sessions, around the training sessions and around the games. And it’s good to have him on board.”

Manchester United: Fletcher was brought in by Solskjaer

Fletcher, who played for Man United between 2000 and 2015, was brought into the coaching staff by then coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January last year, and two months later he took over the post of technical director – the first in the club’s history. Solskjaer was sacked in November but Fletcher is still on board and working closely with Rangnick.

However, Rangnick cannot see any structural activities for the big picture in the club, as expected from a technical director and as it is on paper. “I can only talk about what I’ve experienced in the past eleven or twelve weeks. He was almost always part of almost every training session and every game,” said the German.

However, Rangnick emphasized the importance of Fletcher simply by the fact that he knows the players better and can give tactical tips. “I could and will always ask his opinion. It’s good to have him in the team,” said Rangnick.
