Jimmy Amisial found a baby in the trash four and a half years ago. Spontaneously he took the child in, became the legal guardian and now wants to officially adopt the boy.

On New Year’s Eve 2018, Jimmy Amisial made a life-changing discovery. On his way to a party in his native Haiti, he passed a crowd. Looking closer, he saw that the group had huddled around a baby lying abandoned in a pile of trash. “It was crying and not a soul cared about it,” recalls Amisial, who was 22 at the time and actually lives in the US state of Texas.

Amisial didn’t have the heart to leave the baby there. He picked up the boy, who was about three months old, took him with him and took care of him. “When I picked him up, he immediately stopped crying.” Jimmy Amisial and Emilio, as he called the boy, are now a family. They now want to make it official: Amisial wants to adopt Emilio and is collecting donations for it.

Adoption costs more than $40,000

After taking the baby, he brought it to his mother. The next day, a judge came by to ask him if he wanted to become the boy’s legal guardian, otherwise no parents would have come forward. “After he asked me that, I had many sleepless nights. But my mother reminded me that nothing happens without a reason,” Amisial told CNN. He returned to Texas for his studies while his mother took care of the child and Amisial supported them both financially.

Since 2019, Amisial has been working to adopt Emilio. “I’m glad I had the opportunity to change his life – from a boy who was thrown into the trash to a wonderful sweetheart.” But in addition to the legal subtleties, the necessary money was a hurdle in the adoption process – more than 40,000 US dollars are needed for this. Therefore, Amisial started a crowdfunding campaign.

Donations came from all over the world, and the goal of $60,000 has now been surpassed. So nothing should stand in the way of Emilio’s adoption. But even if that hadn’t worked out, the bond between the now four-year-old and his savior is unwavering: “He calls me dad. And even though I’m only his temporary legal guardian, I see myself as his father.”
