The neighborhood is squared and the police are on the spot

A substantial national police force is on site, with several vehicles. The street is cut at both ends, traffic is diverted onto rue de Liège for vehicles arriving from place Gramont and wishing to turn in the direction of the castle district.

As for passers-by who would like to pass by, they are invited to take other paths. Residents cannot return to their homes. On social networks, the police also encourage not to come to the neighborhood.

Especially since the man would be likely to be armed and would have threatened to blow up the building.

Gas shut off

GRDF teams, called around 7:45 p.m., cut off the gas in the building at 8 p.m. They are always on the spot, like the firefighters, also present. The director of the prefect’s cabinet, Théophile de Lassus, and the deputy of the town hall of Pau on duty, Béatrice Jouhandeaux, also arrived on the scene.

The intervention of the forces of order is in progress. Around midnight, the RAID men, arriving from Bordeaux and Toulouse, entered the building and began negotiations with the madman.

known to the neighborhood

No information has filtered, for the moment, on the motivations of the individual. It is in the apartment of his ex-girlfriend, on the first floor of the building located at number 8 of the street, that this man would have taken refuge. He is alone in the apartment, his ex-spouse not being him.

According to the neighbors who were evacuated and whom we were able to interview, the disputes were very frequent and very violent. The man was indeed known to the neighborhood and some refused to open the door to him when he showed up at the entrance to the building. His ex-girlfriend had asked them not to open to him.

The police also intervened several times to put an end to the brawls. “We were used to these arguments but we didn’t think it would get to this point,” testified a neighbor.

Already three years ago

Note that rue Bordenave d’Abère has already experienced a similar event. In November 2019, in this same street and in this same building, a man had taken refuge in his accommodation for several hours and had already threatened to blow up the building.
