Last summer, Alexander Vlaskamp, whose contract was just extended early by five years, was once again on the highways and rest stops. The 52-year-old boss of the Munich truck and bus manufacturer MAN doesn’t just want to know what’s going on out there. He also asks the truckers what else they need in their vehicle besides built-in TVs and microwaves. This year, the native Dutchman wants to start series production of electric trucks in Munich with the company, which belongs to the VW Group’s Traton commercial vehicle holding company. The only question is: Do the freight forwarders actually have the money to convert their fleets from diesel to battery trucks overnight? One thing is clear to the manager: in 20 years there will no longer be diesel buses rolling through German cities.
