Malcolm Nance is an expert on terrorism, extremism and insurgency and the author of several bestselling books. Now the American is fighting Russia in Ukraine. He told the US broadcaster MSNBC how it came about.

US bestselling author and TV pundit Malcolm Nance has traveled to Ukraine to support the country in its fight against the Russian army. “I spent some time here in the pre-war period and when the invasion took place I had friends in Donetsk who were in the Ukrainian army and wrote to us: ‘We won’t survive tonight. We’ve been hit 500 times’, the 61-year-old explained to the US broadcaster MSNBCwhy he joined the International Legion of Territorial Defense. “The more I saw of the war, the more I thought, ‘I’m done talking. It’s time to act.'”

Malcolm Nance accuses Russia of war of annihilation

Nance, who served in US Navy Intelligence for two decades, is executive director of US think tank The Terror Asymmetrics Project. He has worked as a counterterrorism expert for US networks NBC News and MSNBC and has written several bestsellers, including “The Plot to Hack America,” about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attempts to influence the 2016 US presidential election, and “The Plot to Destroy Democracy” about the “undermining of America and the dismantling of the West by Putin and his spies”.

“I’m here to help this country fight what is essentially a war of annihilation,” Nance said. “This is an existential war, and Russia brought it to these people, and it’s killing civilians en masse, and there are people like me who are here to do something about it.”

Of the US news site “The Daily Beast” told Nance, he was “touched” when he met his unit for the first time. “The International Legion is one of the best kept secrets in the country. That’s the story. They were people on a higher level than me,” the Navy veteran said. “I can’t tell you how diverse this group really is. It’s literally a multinational force of men and women who are here to defend Ukraine.” About 20,000 people from 52 countries are currently fighting Russia in Ukraine, according to MSNBC.

In an interview with the TV station, Nance also made a direct appeal to US President Joe Biden: “Russia has an advantage on the battlefield and that is long-range artillery,” said the 61-year-old. “Let me say something to the President of the United States: Give [der Ukraine] a counter-battery with long-range artillery – multiple missile launch systems – to outperform the artillery’s range. When you do that, you stop the attacks on civilians because that’s what they do with the artillery.”

The Russian army first destroys infrastructure and then goes into the cities and kills men, women and children, Nance reported. And that is the reason “why we are all here”. “We really need to help them somehow to stop this and so I decided to come here to help them with my skills.”
